Understanding Mealworms
Mealworms are the larval form of the Darkling Beetle. These beetles undergo a four-stage life cycle, beginning as eggs. They then develop into larvae (the mealworms themselves), followed by the pupal stage, and finally transform into adult Darkling Beetles.
Pets That Enjoy Mealworms
- Bluebirds
- Bearded Dragons
- Fish
- Frogs
Mealworms provide a protein content comparable to crickets but contain nearly twice the fat. Because of this, they should not serve as a staple diet for most pets. Instead, they are best offered occasionally as a supplemental treat.
They are particularly beneficial for pets in brumation, as the extra fat helps sustain energy reserves. Pregnant pets can also benefit from their high-fat content.
Bearded dragons under two years old should not consume mealworms. Mealworms have a tough exoskeleton called chitin, which can be difficult for younger dragons to digest, potentially leading to impaction. If impaction occurs, a visit to a qualified reptile veterinarian may be necessary.
Proper Mealworm Storage
Ordering live mealworms is easy, but proper storage is key to keeping them fresh. After receiving your shipment, transfer them to a plastic container—something about the size of a shoebox works well for 500 mealworms.
Next, add bedding material such as oatmeal, wheat bran, or grain. These materials serve a dual purpose as both bedding and food.
Hydration is also essential, but avoid adding water directly, as it can promote mold growth. Instead, provide moisture by placing slices of potatoes, apples, oranges, or other juicy fruits and vegetables into the container. This also helps gut-load the mealworms, making them more nutritious for your pet.
Unless breeding them, store mealworms in the warmest section of your refrigerator, usually the door. Refrigeration puts them into dormancy, preventing them from developing into pupae. Before refrigeration, it's best to feed them to ensure they remain healthy.
How to Properly Dust Mealworms
For reptiles like bearded dragons, dusting mealworms with calcium is crucial. This process helps prevent metabolic bone disease, a common issue in reptiles lacking sufficient calcium.
Dusting is simple: place a handful of mealworms in a plastic bag, add one tablespoon of calcium powder, and gently shake the bag to coat them evenly. Then, offer the dusted mealworms to your pet.
However, remember that mealworms are not ideal for bearded dragons under two years old due to their chitin content. If you're looking for a more digestible alternative, superworms are a better choice.
Choosing the Right Mealworm Size
As a general rule, the food you offer your pet should not exceed the space between their eyes. This helps ensure safe and easy digestion.
