What Are Black Soldier Fly Larvae?

Black Soldier Fly Larvae (Hermetia illucens) are nutrient-rich feeders and efficient composters. They consume more waste than redworms, and their frass is a valuable garden fertilizer. Unlike house flies, they don’t spread disease and deter house fly infestations in compost bins.

Life Cycle

  • Egg: 1–4 days
  • Larva: 5–22 days
  • Pupa: 23–37 days
  • Adult Fly: 38–45 days

Nutritional Value for Reptiles

Our BSFL are fed wholesome grains and almond hulls, ensuring they are parasite-free and nutritious.

Feeder Moisture Protein Fat Fiber Calcium (mg/kg) Phosphorus
Superworms 58% 20% 18% 3% 177 2,370
Crickets 70% 20% 7% 3% 407 2,950
BSFL 61% 18% 14% 3% 9,340 3,560

High Calcium Content

BSFL have exceptional calcium levels, making dusting unnecessary. For calcium absorption, ensure your reptile gets vitamin D via UVB bulbs.

Choosing the Right Size

BSFL darken as they mature. Reptiles prefer soft-bodied larvae over harder pupae, which can be difficult to digest. Select a size equal to the space between your pet’s eyes:

  • ½" BSFL: 7–8 days old
  • ¾" BSFL: 10–12 days old

Storage & Prolonging Larval Stage

BSFL come with a nutritious bedding mix lasting 6 days. Extend their lifespan with:

  • Lower Temps (60°F): Slows growth for 2–3 weeks
  • Dehydration: Causes dormancy and minor shrinkage
  • Freezing: Kills BSFL but preserves nutrients

Chickens Love BSFL

BSFL are rich in protein, fat, and calcium—key for egg production, strong shells, and healthy yolks.

BSFL consume twice their body weight daily, breaking down food waste, including meat and citrus. They thrive in 85–95°F and 70% humidity.

Setting Up a Compost Bin

  • Temperature: Ideal range is 85–95°F; below 50°F causes dormancy.
  • Humidity: 70% ensures activity.
  • Food: BSFL eat nearly all organic waste.
  • Escape Tube: Allows pupae to self-harvest into a collection area.

BSFL are a powerful feeder and composting solution. Whether for reptiles, chickens, or waste reduction, they are a sustainable, nutrient-rich choice.
